Hi Shelley!

I was browsing in the internet and remembered about the blog. How are you?

I'm taking the speaking course in CELE with teacher Luis Cabrera. I'm enjoying the course; the teacher is very good and it is a nice group ^^. Alicia is in my group, do you remember her?

Did you receive the mail about the meeting? Will you go? I hope so.

I miss your course and your smiling face too, you're such a nice person :)

I'll keep reading the blog, so we're in touch!

Hope to see you soon!

In case you visit here ...

Hi everyone!

I don't know if you ever visit here to see if anyone's written anything. I don't have an English class this semester at the CELE (I'm teaching in the Formación de Profesores course) and I miss your smiling (and sometimes sleepy) faces a lot!

I'd love to know which course you're currently doing, those that are still taking courses at the CELE, and how it is going with you. Also, any other news you'd care to share - how your university / postgraduate studies are going, any interesting news ... feel free to write anything here!

I'm in touch with some of you on Facebook but for others who prefer to avoid that particular space, you're welcome to write here.

Take care!
Shelley

HELLO

Before evaluating my performance in class, I would like to mention that the activities and the method of teaching were very good.

The experience to learn new things of another culture simply fascinating.
Another essential thing is to have a native speaker to improve the listening that is why during the course I concentrated my attention in my pronunciation for that reason I thank you for the web site that you recommended in the blog and I suggest this dictionary in which you can hear the British and the United States pronunciation of the word that you are looking.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/

My performance in class I feel was good in my personal way to learn, as I told you I take more time in processing new information, reason why I do not like to saturate myself of data that I am going to forget this is my strategy to get forever the new knowledge.

With me I acquire all the strategies of learning that are being used continuously in the implementation of the language in its different forms.

In a simple way “the best course I have taken”

And remember. "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."

Best regards.

Self evaluation. Alfonso

Hi everybody!!! Hello Shelley!!!!!

First of all I want to say I’m sorry, and it is incredible but this is the second time I write on the blog. I am really sorry, and there is any excuse to explain it. But well, I write for two reasons: the former is an opinion about the course and the later is the self evaluation.

About the course is easy to give an opinion about it because is the third semester I am in the CELE and I have elements to compare, in a good way, the work and the goals reached in class. The previous semesters were good, one was very funny but maybe there were absences of contents. The other course was complete in the sense of the contents of the book but it was a little boring. In this case I felt very comfortable in class, I liked all the activities, the home works and the movies of course!!!!
I was going to write one week ago and claim for a reunion (party), because i think there is not a total interaction between the classmates. Some of us were in previous semesters but most of us did not know ourselves. So, when I knew about the party I felt happy and I celebrated it.

I really enjoyed the cultural part of the class. Thanks everybody for sharing your experiences and curious and important knowledge. Thanks Shelley for share with us a little bit about your great country, you made me wish to go to Australia.

About my self-evaluation there are some things that I want to say:

* About my performance in the class I think it was regular. One problem that I have at the beginning of any process is my shyness. I don't talk a lot, and to do it is necessary so much time and work. That's why sometimes I don't do so much participations, but with the pass of the time I talk more and I really impressed myself with my participations.

* Talking about the home works I always did it. There were about two home works that I didn't deliver in time but I did it after and I gave an explanation.

* In the attendance I think I was one of the most regular students in the class. I always arrived in time and when I did not come I investigated the homeworks and I did it.

Finally. I want to express my advance in the class. I think listening is still my weakest part in English, but this course made me to improve it and I noticed a big advance. I am good in grammar, but I think I’m going to take the advanced course of grammar and after listening. This is for two reasons. In the future I'd like to write on a magazine about architecture and I would like to do it in different languages (or at least in two), and it is important to write well.

Well I think that's all. I would like to thank everybody for the good moments in the classes and to you Shelley for the perfect leading in the course!!!

See you soon and I hope to see you everybody in other times, starting with the party of tomorrow. I'm sure we’re going to enjoy it.

So, see you tomorrow!!!!!!

>< self evaluation ><

To write a self evaluation is not easy for me because of two reasons: the first one is that the process of notice what you have learned is not a simple thing, you have to turn your eyes into the pass and imagine yourself at the beginning of the road; and the place where you can do this is the opposite of the beginning: the end. And this is obviously the second reason that stop me.

And this is the moment for give you all my sincere thanks because the improvements and learning couldn´t be possible without you. As I said at first time I write on the blog, I was stuck with the language, but I have learn a lot of grammar however the most important of this is that I have learn it with exercise and practice that Shelly, with the help of the book and the exercise made by herself, helps us to do. Besides this, I know my grammar knowledge isn´t perfect, I could have work more on learning English better but I didn´t :( my effort wasn´t very big.

There is a little thing that I want to say: my pronunciation is awful (I think it was worst at the beginning of the semester than now) and sometimes I think Shelly understand me just for mimic and no because of my words and I really appreciate the patience of lead me try to explain a situation by my own. Her patience have help me to improve the way I talk.

I know I have a lot of thing for improve but I really think the ones that I mentioned were the most important.
Thank you for a great and fun semester XOXO

Self evaluation - David

Hi everybody, this is my self evaluation and I would like to start with an special acknowledgement to Shelley for everything in this course mainly for your dedication to your job, was a pleasure to work with you.

In my opinion my performance along the semester was regular because I had a lot of absences and that was a problem with the program for the semester because I didn´t learn enough about topics in which I´m not very good.

In this course I learnt a lot of vocabulary and more about structures that I tought I had learnt very well that´s important for me because I knew new interesting things about this language.

I improved in my grammar and listening, was an important situation don´t speak in spanish because it helps to make an special effort to understand better what people say.

On the other hand, I have to improve in gerunds and infinitives, it is very difficult to me, I need to work in that.

Ok, that´s it, I hope see you again in other moment, nice to meet you.

Self evaluation

Hi Shelley!!!

Well, Ithink this semester was really helpful to me to learn more and improve my English, even though I have many problems with prepositions and specially, when I'm speaking, I have more problems with the use of times in my sentenses. I think the reason is fossilization, I'll keep working on it.

I put all my effort in my homeworks, but I guess I could improve more because I know I can. Also I think that my exams could be better.

The methods that You used were really good, I loved the journal writting because it helped me to know more words and usually, the topics were funny and interesting.

Read the book, was a different activity for me, I never did that, so I learned to geta general idea of a book.

One thing that helped me to know more was the part of the class where we checked our mistakes or the common mistakes and the tips you gave us

Finally, I thank your patience because I know I have many problems speaking and writting and you always explained me and corrected me in a very good way, with kindness.

My best wishes and success.
Alicia Islas

By the way, how many dishes and glasses should I take to???

The right Hitler, for the right future ...

Hi everyone! Wow, so many entries on one day! Thanks to all who are writing. It's great to read your posts for a number of reasons:
  • It helps me know what activities helped you throughout the semester
  • It helps me know where you feel you are at after one semester of level 6 (especially those who haven't studied English for a long time)
  • It helps YOU to reflect on your own learning
  • It helps others think about what they learned as compared to others in the group.
Having watched that funny clone video three times tonight I thought I'd put in a post with the trailer to The Boys From Brazil, which is a 1978 movie based on the book that Roberto read and reviewed (we saw a part of it tonight on the video, talking about Hitler). It was such an interesting review of the book that I decided I'd rent the movie and watch it, which I did a few weeks ago. I highly recommend it! Especially if you like creepy and eccentric characters.

Below is a link to the original trailer from the movie so that you can get more of a taste for it. It might be interesting watching after having talked a lot about clones in class!

Bye for now!

Self Evaluation (Daniel)

Hi, Shelley. Well, I think I've learned many things such as the pronunciation of some words and certain grammar rules (I hope not to forget them...), moreover we have discovered some aspects of Australia that otherwise it would have been difficult to find out such as the existence of vegemite! I did like the movies we've watched (especially Blade Runner) and I think it's been a good way of improving our listening ability. Thanks to all these activities I've acquired more acquaintance with English even if I haven't been able of putting all the necessary effort (maybe because of the hour or the pressure of other subjects). I imagine my performance has been reasonably appropriate but I would like to have worked better. I think I'll keep working on all the aspects of English, especially on listening and speaking because I have still to improve a lot my ability of interacting with other people in "real time". This course has been pretty funny and useful and I would like to have another one just like this.

That's all for now... I'll see you later!

..::: Self-Evaluation :::..

Well, this English course was really helpful for me. To be honest, before entering the course I thought I almost knew how to speak English; but through the semester I noticed there were lots of aspects about the idiom I had to improve on.

I think I learned many things in the course. First, lots of words I didn’t know that helped me to get more vocabulary. I improved my listening with the records and the movies, but most of all with the classes because I hadn’t had a class in English ever =S , and having a native teacher that speaks very well the idiom is good to improve the listening I think. My grammar improved too: there are expressions I hadn’t even thought about what was the correct way to say those expressions; for example the correct use of hypothetical situations. I liked the journal writing; as I don’t usually write in English, the journal made me think about the correct spelling of some words and about the correct order of the sentences. Because of the readings in the book and some activities in classes, I got a better reading level as well. It has been the only English course where I have had to participate actively, and because of my mistakes and my companions mistakes, I learned the correct pronunciation of many words and that was useful to get a better speaking.

About the effort I put in the course, I think it was the necessary to learn well, but not the enough effort I had to put in. I should had studied for my own and do some extra classes activities to get a better learning I think. In the next course I’ll try to put more from me.

I learned lots of things in the course but, obviously, I must keep working on many other things. I have to work on the four aspects: reading, listening, speaking and writing. I think that I should try to practice more the idiom, by reading books, articles, etc. watching movies, listening songs, and trying to talk with people who speaks the idiom. I must keep working on grammar aspects and practice the writing with notes for myself for example.

Finally, I’d like to congratulate and thank you Shelley. You’re a very good teacher, I really like your method (I love watching movies, listening songs, and doing funny activities ^^), it made the class funny. And I like your way of being, always smiling, I think you’re a sweet person. If I’m able to, I’ll absolutely take another course with you =)

P.D. Sorry because I didn’t write on the blog in the semester, it’s just that I don’t usually write on facebooks, hi5, or things like those where you interact with other persons =$ but I think this is a nice way to communicate.

Selfevaluation

Hi shelley
First of all I want to apologise my timing on the evaluation.
Well to be really honest I think I've improved a lot since the first class,
that is because I had not take clases of english since i finished high school,
and this semester was really helpful to remaind me things like reported speach,
articles, how to expres possibilities, and specially the spelling thing that is really a big problem
to me..... as you could have seen, my spelling is terrible, but I think that is something I've got to work out, I don't know, maybe reading and writting more, even do short stories....
I think the most helpful thing to correct my spelling problem was the Journal writting, I think it's a great idea, and I've never seen that a teacher did this, so thank you for that.
On the subject of my performance on troughout the semester I can say that was good, I try to do the homeworks and pay attencion in the class so in general I think i did well.
XOXO
Elvis

Self-evaluation.

Hi Shelly, I want to apologize for write my self-evaluation until now, but this weekend was a little estrange, so I didn´t had enough time.

Well, to be honest I have to say that I didn’t do my best throughout the semester, first because I was working all day in a project for my work, nevertheless when I quit my job I think I was more focused on the English classes and other stuff that I had forgotten.

In other hand, I have learned a lot of grammar stuff, and also a lot of phrases that I can use in specific situations; those are very useful because you can use them to express yourself better. Also I think that I improved on my vocabulary, I really learned a lot of new one.

I believe that English, well in fact every language is a matter of time, patient, and practice, so I have to keep working in every part of English, because I really want to speak it the best is possible for me.

Finally, I want to thank you for everything, you are really a very good teacher and a wonderful person, thank you very much…

My self-evaluation

Hello Shelley!

I'm too sad because our course has finished.

Well, I want to express that I really enjoyed, loved and apprecciated the way that the class was managed.

I saw that Shelley ever was thoughtful on the blog I want to say thank you because ever I wrote a suggestion ever Shelley took my suggestions in count and gave us material to watch, to read or to listen.

I think, I have improved my english skills perhaps not as wide or deeper as I wish but I tried to do my best effort.

One think that I have really improved is that before this class I have never tried to watch a movie without subtitles and now I do it.

Regarding my development in this course I don´t want to say anything until my final grade will be ready but I know it could be better; the same as most of our peers thought, if the only work that we have, were just learn English language...

I want to give Shelley final comments this are: You have sometimes gave us the use of language through some sheets but other times we use the grammar section of the book, that is someting that I don't like; I got really boring just reading that section and most of the times I think the book is confusing or perhaps could be that mos of the times we were very tired that we can't be awake for reading the little words written on the book. Another suggestion coud be, If you can make some quizes through a blog or web site, just for checking our advance in grammar.

Finally I just say: Thank you Shelley for everything I know you are one of my best English's teacher.

jairo´s selfevaluation

Hi shelley!! first of all i want to apologize for never have writen on the blog untill now, and i want to thank YOU for all your wonderfull classes, the semester was so enjoyable!!! and the must important thing is that i have learned lots of new things, i think the principal improvement i had is in my hearing ability and what i really need to improve is in my writting and grammar, i have to admit not doing my best effort, i didn´t study enough and must of my mistakes in grammar are because of that, that´s why i have to memorize many grammar rules that i always forget to use with terribles consequences when i write, that´s the part what i will keep working on, in the other hand i have learned the correct use of the different tenses and you have helped me to be more selfconfident when i speak, thanks a lot shelley!! and see you today in class!

sel-evaluation

Hi Shelley this is my self-evaluation:

Even though my English is not so great I consider that as a result of the course I have improved my English because I learned new vocabulary and have a better handle of the grammar in both reading and writing.

I think the movies we saw during the course were helpful or at least for me they helped me in the listening part, now it is less difficult to understand a movie without reading the subtitles but still….. There is much for me to do in this issue.
Reading a book was nice and helpful too and of course I admit that I should have written on the blog during the semester.

What I have to keep on improving is my speaking I would like it to be faster and with fewer errors.

Finally there were times when it was a little difficult for me to be on time or go to class because my job is located far from CU and sometimes the traffic can be really stressful so I think this was the most difficult part for me.

Stef / self-evaluation

Hi Shelley!

Here you have my self-evaluation:

I know that in most of the classes I didn´t arrive on time, that was because I had a class from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in which the teacher used to let us go out after the hour, also sometimes I missed some classes, because my career is very demanding (I am studying engineering in telecommunications); regularly I don´t sleep more than 3 or 4 hours per day during the semester and sometimes I had to do exams on Saturdays. Despite that, I´ve learned many things which have been helpful for me, for example when I hear music or when I see documentaries, movies or news in English (your ponunciacion helped me a lot).

Always when I have a chance, I see movies without subtitles to improve my pronunciation, my listening and my vocabulary. I think I have to keep working on the topic of Reported speech because sometimes it confuses me.
After all, I feel I've been doing a considerable effort to learn English, and I will continue doing it.

Shelly, I think that the classes that you gave us were one of the best that I ever had, always you tried to make the class very enjoyable and fun.

Thank you very much!!!!!!

-----Self evaluation-----

Well, first of all I would like to say that I always wanted to have a foreing teacher because I wanted to know if I was good at listening and I must say that I paid a lot of atention when Shelley was speaking during the class that's why I think I have improved a lot my listenig.

In the other hand I think I need to keep practising my writing and my grammar because I have noticed that sometimes I don't know how to write my ideas properly.

Talking about my performance I think it was good but it could be a little bit better and I know that, is just that in some occations my career is so demanding and I have to spend a lot of time studying my subjects.

A good thing is that I think that I have a good knowledge about the topics that we studied during the course.

Finally I think I did a good effort and I liked to learn some things about the australian culture.

*******Roberto Parra - Self Evaluation*******

Hi everyone!!! Hi Shelley!! Now is the time to make my self evaluation for this semester on the English class

- It must be said that i was working this semester, it´s something new for me and it affected
directly on all my classes.
- On Mondays i didn't have any problem, because i'm here at the University all the time (as
you can see here, i´m on my faculty right now). But in wednesday, i went out from school at
1:00 P.M., had to arrive at work at 3 o'clock, and then i had to get back to school for the
English class. It was so hard for me...!, And at fridays, all the fatigue due to school and work
made its appearance, so i didn´t put a lot of attention on that days.
- I think that my performance was Ok, but not enough for me as it was on my previous
English courses.
- It was a plasure for me to work with this group, i would like to keep writing on the blog for
many semesters more..

Dal ati!, Daliwch ati! -----> That means "Keep fighting, don´t surrender" In Welsh
Farewell then, we´ll meet again!!!
Hi everyone!!! Firstly, i need to apoligise because i had to write two weeks ago and two classes ago too on the blog.
For my "2 weeks ago" opinion of the class i need to say that the activity of some real life difficult cases, was outstanding, because we had to make a discussion with our group mates about the advantages and disadvantages of a determined situation. My group´s case was about a 12 years old girl that was hurting herself because she didn't want to became a woman, so the doctors recommended an hormonal treatment for her... Certainly, a group discussion is a great chance to say our own opinions for an specific topic...
I will tell you my opinion of the last 2 weeks in the English class...The activity of the books that we read along the semester was very interesting, because there we had plenty of kinds of books, all of them seem to be very worth-reading... like 'The Alchemist', 'Harry Potter', 'The Boys from Brazil'(my book), and others...
And what about the movie?(The Castle)...I think it was really fun. For me, at the start of the movie, it was hard to listen at the movie, because Australian English is different from the ones i've been learning. But with a little attention, and with the list of "Australian slang" was easier to understand the movie. I think that the movie has a little reflexion to think about:
We have to fight against any obstacle we may encounter, also if we think that it is not worth to fight for it...Let's follow Darryl's steps to get everything what we want...
Weel now is time for me to make my self evaluation, but in another post, see you later guys!!!

Socrates in love/Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World by Kyoichi Katayama

I started to read this book a few months ago, it's about two japanese teen agers, Sakutaru and Aki, opposites, he is very quiet, smart and she is popular, beautiful, they start a relationship and deal with some troubles and doubts, suddenly Aki get sick, we are witness of all the suffering and inconditional love between this youths until the end.

I must admit at the beginning was very intesting, the dialogues was short but with a deep meaning but from the page 60 it becomes very "sweet" for me, the rest of the book is a all repetition of how we can live without love and how are happy the people who have anyone. This is only my opinion, if you have time you should read it and tell us what do you think.

About last class

Hi everyone,

Well, about last class, I really enjoyed, first because of David Hasselhoff, is good to know that people can do almost anything for money.

About the vocabulary, I don’t know, there were a lot of words that I never heard before, in fact were the most of them. So that made me think that probably the movie will be a little bit difficult to understand, I hope I´m wrong… see you tomorrow.

Last Class

Hello Sheley,
I think that it was a great idea to learn grammar with
David Haselhof (forgive speling!!!! )
It would be easier to learn reported speach this way... jajajajaja

Eddie Mabo (the Mabo case)

A little more information about the Mabo case!
Eddie Mabo was an Australian Aboriginal  born in 1936, on a small island in Torres Strait, in the very north-east of Australia. In that time these islands were strictly controlled by the government, and as a teenager Eddie was forced to leave the island for doing something silly. He worked in many places, including as a gardener in a university, where he also read a lot of books and listened to people lecturing. Here he had a conversation with some university professors, where he talked about his island and his people. The professors realized that Eddie thought the land belonged to him. Gently they told him that no, the land was Australia's, because nobody owned that land.
This is to say that the Aboriginal people, who had lived in Australia (and on the Torres Strait Islands) for thousands of years, were considered to be "nobody" and had no right to own any of the land they had lived on. It was known as "terra nullius".
Well, Eddie Mabo was completely shocked by this, and decided to take it to the High Court to challenge this law and win back the land for his people. It took over ten years of legal discussions, and in fact Eddie Mabo died (aged 55) before the High Court finally announced the verdict in 1992: that the Aboriginal people did have "native title" (ownership) and had the right to claim their land.
This legal decision became known simply as "Mabo" or "The Mabo case" and was a historic decision that has opened up new laws which make it possible for Aboriginal people to claim native title in Australia.
You can find out more about him at this site:

One other thing that you may not know is that when an Aboriginal person dies, their tradition is to never speak the name of that person again. They consider the name to be finished and it's a way to respect the pain of having lost that person. If anyone else in the town has the same name, they have to change it because it can't be spoken again.
So while white people talk about Eddie Mabo, now that he is dead his name is not spoken by the Aboriginal people. When they refer to this case they call it the Native Title decision.
I've referred to him by name only so that you will know more about him.
See you tonight!

Hi everyone:

I really enjoyed last class because I prefer to learn grammar with excercises of a movie or a tv serie that learn from the book.
Dro. Who was funny and very touching to me because I'm having a difficult time but when I'm in the class I try to forget everything.
See you soon.

Some information

Hi everyone, I would like saying that the class is one of the best I have taken, I really like it and enjoy it. On the other hand, I have seen that we have some troubles with the topic in which we are working, for that reason I decided to make a little list with some rules about conditionals, perhaps most of you have or know these, but it´s just to refresh and give a reference to solve our doubts.

ZERO CONDITIONAL: IF CLAUSE: simple present MAIN CLAUSE: simple present
A situation normally true.
Example: If I run, I get tired. You know I somoke 40 cigarretes a day.

FIRST CONDITIONAL: IF CLAUSE: simple present MAIN CLAUSE: future
Example: If I study for my test, I will get a good grade.

SECOND CONDITIONAL: IF CLAUSE: simple past MAIN CLAUSE: would + present simple
Hypothetical situation
Example: If I were prince, I wolud live in a castle.

THIRD CONDITIONAL: IF CLAUSE: past perfect (had + past participle) MAIN CLAUSE: would have, could have, might have + past participle.
Hypothetical situations in past
Example:If he had given up smoking, he might not have got lung cancer.

FOURTH CONDITIONAL (MIXED):IF CLAUSE: past perfect MAIN CLAUSE: would + present. Another case is IF CLAUSE: simple past MAIN CLAUSE: would have + past participle
Present a past situations
Example:If I had time, I would go with you.
He would have lent you the money, if he were sure you were going to pay him back.

I hope this helps us to understand better.

My English class

Hello!
(these are my corrections)
I expect that I improve my blog and not the opposite.

I was thinking about how our English class has been developed, I think most of the activities are been ok, I really enjoy to start learning about English culture (I´m talking about all the culture of countries who talk English's language) but not just American culture.

Most of the times, We don´t like so much English because all the customs which we know are from US and this is a bad reference (this is just my point of view).

I'm learning French language either; in that class we usually talk or read something about French's culture; and although this is a very difficult language I could learn it a little bit easy, so I have realized that learning a language is easier when you know more about culture because you can make links between your own culture and the other one; that's because, I really enjoy the last class about "Doctor's Who".

So, Shelley I really aprecciate if you can show (teach) us more about your culture, I don´t know, as an example could be the way that boys and girls meet one each other, or how Australia was colinezed or perhaps another classical tv's serie or movie.

Please!!
